Vitritis or Vitreitis is an inflammatory reaction of the vitreous (jelly-like texture) or hyaloid membrane as a result of disease in adjacent structures, such as the ciliary body, choroid, or retina, that causes cells to infiltrate the vitreous.
Vitreous inflammation or vitritis can arise from many causes, including infectious and non-infectious, including rheumatological and autoimmune processes. Vitritis is often a threat to vision and has serious consequences.
Treatment depends on the cause.
